Those of us who have been in and around figure skating for many years remember the legendary Don Jackson. He was the 1962 World Figure Skating Champion and devoted his life to figure skating as a world class skater, show skater, highly regarded coach as well a global ambassador to the sport. Don’s dedication to figure skating has been recognized by his induction in both the USFSA and Skate Canada Hall of Fame. His story can be found here.
According to the Jackson Ultima website www.jacksonultima.com , Don was inspired by his love for the sport and his keen interest in product design. Don developed the first Jackson Figure Skate. In 1966, Don, in partnership with his brother Bill, founded Don Jackson Skate Products which they operated for 20 years as a family business.
While attending the May, 2018 Professional Skaters Association (PSA) Conference in Orlando, Florida this week, I had the opportunity to attend a session on skating equipment presented by Jackson Ultima boots. It reminded me just how important having the right boots and blades can be to a skater’s success.
The Jackson Ultima presentation at the conference was filled with useful information not only about the variety of boots and styles they offer but also on the assortment of blades they have available. Their product options, from stock boots to semi-custom to custom, are offered at a variety of price points to meet the needs of many skaters and coaches.
For me, comfort and the ability to be in my boots for long days is paramount. Jackson boots work well because I can wear them for three hours on the very first day. By the second day, I am able to skate in them for up to 8 hours. The fit is spectacular and I have no pain or discomfort even after long days coaching on the ice. This is partially due to their custom wrap system, where the leather at the top of the boot comes across to prevent the skater from getting lace bite. It enables the skater to have a more comfortable fit and easier break-in period.
Jackson has a wide variety of blades for all levels to choose from as well. I wear the Jackson Matrix blade and love it because of its easy edging and turning ability.
If you have a chance you can visit their booth at any major events or check them out on line. Having the best equipment is so helpful to any athlete in any sport. I always say that if you take care of your feet your feet will take care of you.
The session is over and the Zamboni is coming out.
Auf Wiedersehen
